Worship…
I realize in the contemporary, American Christian culture that hundreds of connotations and definitions come with the word “worship,” and though some are not exactly accurate (in my opinion), I am thankful to live in an era and a country where we are free to explore this concept with so many different creative expressions, but I want to go beyond music and arts and focus on (what I believe to be) the truest expression of worship, our lives.
Last month I attended the Awakening conference hosted by Jesus Culture. In the first session Kim Walker Smith said, “What would the music be without His presence?”
I would like to ask, “What would our lives be without His presence?”
The reason Jesus came, died, and rose again was so that we could live with/in/consumed by the Presence of God.
Here is why I say this: Worship is an outward expression of our inward reality. Worship is what consumes our heart, soul, and mind. We become what we worship. (Matthew 22:34-40)
Let me finger-paint you a picture:
- Moses: Asks to see God’s face, instead he was allowed to encounter the passing of God’s presence, and it affected him so much that he walked away glowing and his physical body never deteriorated (Jude 1:9). Thus marked forever as a man who knew God.
- David: Known as the only man in history as “a man after God’s on heart.” Why? Psalm 27:4. David lived a very post-Resurrection lifestyle in a pre-Resurrection age because the one thing he desired most was God’s presence. A man who knew God.
- Jesus: “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father.” Jesus came to show everyone what a true life of worship can look like. Jesus is the definition of worship. A man who was God.
Let every intention of your heart be consumed with seeking the Presence of God and living a life of worship will be as natural as breathing.
Selah.
